The Guarantor for the protection of personal data presented the report on the activities carried out in 2021. The document illustrates the interventions of the authority that have mainly concerned the protection of the fundamental rights of people in the digital world. 448 measures were adopted and penalties of around €13.5 million were levied. The Guarantor has also participated in various international activities, also providing its contribution to the elaboration of laws on digital markets and services. Privacy Guarantor: activities in 2021 The Guarantor adopted 448 measures in 2021 (+56% compared to 2020), 338 of which were corrective and sanctioning. It also responded to 9,184 complaints covering various topics and sectors, including marketing, online data of public administrations, health, cybersecurity, banking and finance, work. 12 violations were reported to the judicial authority regarding remote control of workers, abusive access to computer systems, unlawful processing of data, falsity in declarations and non-compliance with the measures. Among the most important interventions is the imposition on TikTok of measures to block the registration of younger users. The Guarantor has imposed on Clearview AI a fine of 20 million euros for collecting the images of Italian users. The authority has provided help to counter the phenomenon of revenge porn and to protect victims of cyberbullying. The Guarantor also highlighted the risks to privacy due to the use of digital assistants, Facebook smart glasses and drones. Other interventions concerned Green Pass, IO app and SPID for minors. In 2021, 2,071 data breaches (+50% compared to 2020) were notified to the authority by public and private entities, many of which related to the dissemination of health data. The Guarantor has repeatedly invited public administrations and companies to invest in security solutions that can block any type of threat, including ransomware, which is also widespread in Italy.
